Minecraft Xbox Series X/S Finally Gets 4K Resolution Support in Preview Update
Minecraft Xbox Series 4K support and Armadillo update bring sharper visuals and exciting new features to console players.
I remember testing Minecraft Preview build 1.20.60.23 on my Xbox Series X shortly after it went live on December 13, 2023. As a console player who had spent far too long staring at a 1080p image while my PlayStation friends enjoyed crisp 4K, I immediately scrolled through the changelog. Near the very end, buried below the Armadillo and block updates, I found the line that mattered most: Xbox Series consoles finally received 4K resolution support.

Before this update, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions of Minecraft were running the Xbox One X build. That build was never optimized for Microsoft's newer consoles, so I was stuck with a 1080p experience. It felt especially odd because Mojang Studios and Xbox are both owned by Microsoft, yet Sony's PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 had been enjoying 4K for a long time. After many months of asking for something better, Xbox players finally got the visual upgrade they deserved. As of 2026, I still think this was one of the most overlooked but important console changes in Minecraft history.
Why 4K Took So Long
I have never heard a clear official reason from Mojang for the delay. The change appeared quietly in the Preview changelog for version 1.20.60.23, not as a headline feature. It is still strange to me that a Microsoft-owned studio would leave its own flagship console family behind for so long. Regardless of the reason, the update allowed the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S to render Minecraft at 2160p, improving texture clarity, distant terrain, and overall visual comfort.

I noticed the benefit most when building tall structures and looking across large savannas. The extra resolution made the blocky world feel sharper without changing the game's classic charm.
The Armadillo and Wolf Armor
The same Preview build also introduced the Armadillo, the winner of the Minecraft 2023 Mob Vote. I personally love this neutral mob because it drops Armadillo Scutes periodically and when brushed. Those scutes can be used to craft Wolf Armor, a brand-new set added in the patch.
Here is a quick breakdown of the Armadillo behavior from my testing:
-
Spawns in Savannas
-
Favorite food: Spider Eyes
-
Drops Armadillo Scutes periodically or when brushed
-
Rolls up when it detects a threat
-
Threats include sprinting players, players on a mount or vehicle, and undead mobs
-
Does not roll up while fleeing, in water, in the air, or being led
-
When rolled up, it cannot walk, eat, or be tempted by food
-
Unrolls after no threats are detected for 3 seconds
Wolf Armor turned my adult tamed Wolf into a much sturdier companion. I equipped the armor by using it on the wolf, and I could remove it with Shears. According to the patch notes, Wolf Armor gives the same protection as Diamond Horse Armor, and if a wolf dies while wearing it, the armor drops so it can be reused. Dispensers could also be used to brush scutes off Armadillos, which made farming the new material easier.
Trial Chambers and Other Technical Fixes
Update 1.21 promised to bring the Armadillo to the main client, along with an automated Redstone-powered Crafter, procedurally generated Trial Chambers, and a specialized Trial Spawner that rewards players with loot for defeating enemies. In the Preview patch, Mojang also fixed several Trial Chamber issues. Exposed, Weathered, and Oxidized Copper Bulbs in Trial Chambers were waxed, the Trial Spawner randomized its loot table only once each combat for all players, and a Waxed Copper Grate transparency issue was fixed. The Breeze wind and wind charge rendering were tweaked as well.
New HUD Commands
One addition that I found handy but lesser-known was the new HUD command system. By enabling the Upcoming Creator Features toggle, I could hide and reset HUD elements.
| Command | Effect |
|---|---|
| /hud hide | Hides selected HUD elements |
| /hud reset | Resets HUD visibility |
Available HUD elements included paperdoll, armor, tooltips, touch_controls, crosshair, hotbar, health, progress_bar, hunger, air_bubbles, horse_health, and all. This gave creators and players more control over their screen layout.
Looking Back from 2026
Even now in 2026, I consider that December 2023 Preview update a turning point for Xbox Minecraft players. It corrected a long-standing parity gap and added features that fed directly into the larger 1.21 update. If you are trying the latest Preview builds today, remember that improvements often hide at the bottom of the changelog.
